COMING SOON! HOW I PASSED THE HPNA'S CERTIFIED HOSPICE AND PALLIAVE CARE (CHPN) EXAM! |
Hospice has definitely helped me grow – as a person as well as a nurse. My outlook on life has changed because of it. I’ve noticed that there is one commonality among those whom we serve, and that in the end, it all comes down to relationships. Some are enjoying the relationships they have with a supportive spouse or children, others are mending fences or mourning the loss of a relationship or regretting not having done more to nurture a relationship while they could. Even when a patient is concerned about finances, it is usually because they want someone they love to be well cared for when they're gone.
I've yet to hear a person say they wished they would've become a rock star or went hang gliding over the Rockies or even made a million bucks or spent more time at the office when they reach the end of their life. It's always something about their relationships with people.
So the important things in life are RELATIONSHIPS. Knowing this has helped me nurture the ones I have and become more forgiving and tolerant. It has also helped me to forgive and walk away from relationships that were not productive or nurturing. The other lesson I’ve learned here is: LIFE IS SHORT. Every interaction with someone we care about is a chance to create another memory, so it’s important to treat each opportunity we have to create a memory for someone as though it might be the last. At, 50+ years of age I'm finding, I NEED MORE TIME! If you could grant me even another 50 years, it wouldn't be enough to figure life out and be with the people I want to be with.
OK, a little bit of a deep thinking on my part, but hey, it's my web site! Hang loose, and remember, life is short and relationships are everything! If you love someone, tell them today. You don't know if you'll have another tomorrow! Guiomar Goransson, RN, CHPN.

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea In a beautiful pea-green boat, They took some honey, and plenty of money . Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above, And sang to a small guitar, 'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love, What a beautiful Pussy you are, You are You are! What a beautiful Pussy you are!'
Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl! How charmingly sweet you sing! O let us be married! too long we have tarried: But what shall we do for a ring?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day, To the land where the Bong-tree grows And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood With a ring at the end of his nose, His nose, His nose, With a ring at the end of his nose.
'Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling Your ring? Said the Piggy, 'I will.' So they took it away, and were married next day By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince, Which they ate with a runcible spoon; And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, They danced by the light of the moon, The moon, The moon, They danced by the light of the moon. Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) |
